Aventon – Motor Not Functioning & No Error Code Present TroubleshootingUpdated 2 days ago

This article explains how to troubleshoot a loss of motor function on an Aventon e-bike when no error code is displayed.

Use this article if your bike:

  • powers on normally

  • shows no motor-related error code

  • has no motor assistance

  • has no throttle response and no pedal assist response

This article applies to:

  • Aventon hub-drive bikes

  • Aventon mid-drive bikes

If your bike shows an error code, please follow the appropriate error code troubleshooting article instead.

If your bike still has throttle-only or pedal assist-only operation, use the dedicated troubleshooting articles for those issues instead.

Stop troubleshooting and contact support if anything appears damaged or unsafe.

Before You Start

Please prepare the following:

  • order number or proof of purchase

  • Aventon model

  • photo or video of the issue

  • when the issue first appeared

  • confirmation of whether the bike powers on

  • confirmation of whether the display turns on

  • confirmation of whether throttle and pedal assist both stopped working

  • confirmation of whether any error code appears

  • confirmation of whether the issue happened after riding, charging, transport, storage, impact, water exposure, modification, or third-party repair

  • photos of visible damage, if any

Safety Warnings

  • Do not continue riding if the bike has visible damage, electrical smell, smoke, overheating, or water exposure.

  • Do not open sealed electrical components.

  • Do not work on wiring while the bike is powered on or charging.

  • Do not force electrical connectors together.

  • Stop and contact support if you are unsure.

What This Issue Means

A complete loss of motor function without an error code may be caused by:

  • a loose motor connection

  • a loose harness or controller connection

  • damaged wiring

  • a damaged motor assembly

  • a damaged harness or controller component

The issue may affect:

  • throttle operation

  • pedal assist operation

  • all motor assistance functions

Possible Causes

Possible causes may include:

  • loose motor connection

  • loose controller connection

  • loose harness connection

  • dirt or grit inside accessible connectors

  • damaged motor cable

  • damaged harness cable

  • damaged controller cable

  • damaged motor assembly

  • impact or visible motor damage

  • damaged controller on hub-drive models

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1 – Confirm the Bike Has No Error Code

Power the bike on and check the display.

Confirm whether an error code is shown.

If yes

Please use the appropriate error code troubleshooting article for your bike before continuing.

If no

Continue to Step 2.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 2.

Step 2 – Confirm There Is No Motor Function

Check whether:

  • throttle operation is completely lost

  • pedal assist operation is completely lost

If yes

Continue to Step 3.

If no

If only throttle or only pedal assist is affected, use the dedicated troubleshooting article for that issue.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check for Visible Damage

Inspect the following areas for visible damage:

  • motor assembly

  • motor cable

  • accessible harness connections

  • controller connections

  • wiring near the motor area

Check for:

  • cuts

  • crushed cables

  • loose connectors

  • disconnected plugs

  • impact damage

  • signs of water exposure

If yes

If visible damage is found, please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 4.

If the issue clears

The issue may have been caused by a loose or partially disconnected connection.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 4.

Step 4 – Check Accessible Motor and Harness Connections

Check the accessible connections between:

  • the controller and motor

  • the harness and motor

  • the harness and controller

Ensure the connections are:

  • firmly connected

  • properly threaded together if applicable

  • free from dirt or grit

Reconnect any loose accessible connectors and retest the bike.

If yes

If motor function returns, the issue was likely caused by a loose or contaminated connection.

Continue monitoring the bike.

If no

Continue to Step 5.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely connection-related.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 5.

Step 5 – Check for Damaged Cables

Inspect accessible wiring for damage.

Pay close attention to:

  • motor-side cables

  • harness-side cables

  • controller-side cables

If yes

If damaged wiring is found, please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 6.

If the issue clears

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 6.

Step 6 – Check the Motor Assembly

Inspect the motor assembly for:

  • impact damage

  • unusual noise

  • abnormal resistance

  • visible damage
