Aventon – Odometer/Speed Inaccuracy TroubleshootingUpdated 2 days ago

This article explains how to troubleshoot inaccurate speedometer or odometer readings on Aventon e-bikes.

Use this article if your bike:

  • shows incorrect speed readings

  • shows incorrect distance or mileage readings

  • displays inconsistent speed readings

  • stops displaying speed or mileage completely

This article applies to:

  • Aventon hub-drive bikes

  • Aventon mid-drive bikes

If you are unsure whether your bike is hub-drive or mid-drive, please confirm your model before continuing.

Stop troubleshooting and contact support if anything appears damaged or unsafe.

Before You Start

Please prepare the following:

  • order number or proof of purchase

  • Aventon model

  • photo or video of the issue

  • when the issue first appeared

  • confirmation of whether the display powers on

  • confirmation of whether the bike still rides normally

  • confirmation of whether the speed reading is incorrect or missing completely

  • confirmation of whether the bike has had any wheel, tyre, display, or electrical parts replaced

  • confirmation of whether the bike experienced water exposure, impact, transport damage, modification, or third-party repair

  • photos of visible damage, if any

Safety Warnings

  • Do not continue riding if the bike has visible wiring damage or unsafe electrical issues.

  • Do not open sealed electrical components.

  • Do not work on wiring while the bike is powered on or charging.

  • Stop and contact support if you are unsure.

What This Issue Means

An inaccurate speedometer or odometer reading can indicate:

  • a connection issue

  • a damaged speed sensor system

  • incorrect wheel or tyre setup

  • incompatible components installed on the bike

If the display completely loses the ability to show speed or mileage, this may indicate a speed sensor issue.

Possible Causes

Possible causes may include:

  • loose or dirty display connections

  • loose or dirty motor connections

  • loose or dirty speed sensor connections

  • damaged speed sensor

  • damaged speed sensor cable

  • missing or damaged wheel magnet

  • damaged rear wheel assembly on hub-drive bikes

  • incorrect wheel size or tyre size

  • incorrect display installed on the bike

  • incorrect display programming

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1 – Check the Bike Type

Confirm whether your bike is:

  • a hub-drive model

  • a mid-drive model

If yes

Continue to Step 2.

If no

Please confirm your Aventon model before continuing.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 2.

Step 2 – Check All Accessible Connections

For hub-drive bikes:

  • check the connections between the display and motor

  • ensure the connections are secure and free from dirt or grit

For mid-drive bikes:

  • check the connections between the display, motor assembly, and external speed sensor

  • ensure the connections are secure and free from dirt or grit

After checking:

  • reconnect everything securely

  • power the bike back on

  • retest the speed and odometer readings

If yes

If the readings return to normal, the issue was likely caused by a loose or dirty connection.

Continue monitoring the bike.

If no

Continue to Step 3.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by poor connection contact or contamination.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check Whether the Display Shows Speed or Mileage

Check whether the display still shows speed and mileage readings.

If yes

Continue to Step 4.

If no

This may indicate a damaged or malfunctioning speed sensor system.

Continue to Step 5.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 5.

Step 4 – Check for Incorrect Components

Check whether:

  • the wheel size has been changed

  • the tyre size has been changed

  • the display has been replaced previously

Speed and odometer readings rely on wheel rotation measurements. Incorrect wheel or tyre sizes may affect the displayed readings.

An incorrect display or incorrect display programming may also cause inaccurate readings.

If yes

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 5.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by incompatible or incorrect components.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 5.

Step 5 – Check the Speed Sensor System

For mid-drive bikes:

  • inspect the external speed sensor area

  • check whether the speed sensor or wheel magnet is missing, loose, or visibly damaged

For hub-drive bikes:

  • note that the speed sensor is built into the rear hub motor assembly

If yes

If visible damage or missing components are found, please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 6.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely related to the speed sensor system.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 6.

Step 6 – Retest the Bike

Power the bike off and back on.

Test the bike again and check:

  • speed readings

  • mileage readings

  • display operation

If yes

If the readings are now accurate, continue monitoring the bike.

If no

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If the issue clears

The issue may have been caused by a temporary connection issue.

If the issue remains

Contact support.

When To Contact Support

Please contact support if:

  • the speed or odometer readings remain inaccurate

  • the display no longer shows speed or mileage

  • there is visible damage to the speed sensor, magnet, wiring, display, or wheel area

  • the bike has had wheel, tyre, display, or electrical parts replaced

  • the bike has experienced water exposure, impact, transport damage, modification, or third-party repair

  • you are unsure how to safely complete any step

  • the issue appears related to the speed sensor system, rear wheel assembly, display, harness, or wiring

If the issue remains after this step, please contact our support team and include the photos/videos listed below.

What To Send Support

Please send:

  • order number or proof of purchase

  • photos of any visible wiring or connector damage

  • confirmation of whether the display still shows speed readings

  • confirmation of whether wheel, tyre, or display components have been replaced

  • confirmation of whether the bike experienced water exposure, impact, modification, or third-party repair
