Aventon – Pedal Assist Not Functioning & No Error Code Present TroubleshootingUpdated 2 days ago

This article explains how to troubleshoot pedal assist (PAS) issues on Aventon e-bikes when there is no error code displayed.

Use this article if your bike:

  • powers on normally

  • the throttle works but pedal assist does not

  • pedal assist works intermittently

  • walk mode works but pedal assist does not

  • there is no error code shown on the display

This article applies to Aventon e-bikes equipped with either:

  • a cadence sensor

  • or a torque sensor

Stop troubleshooting and contact support if anything appears unsafe or damaged.

Before You Start

Please prepare the following:

  • order number or proof of purchase

  • Aventon model

  • photo or video of the issue

  • confirmation of whether the bike powers on

  • confirmation of whether throttle function works

  • confirmation of whether walk mode works

  • confirmation of whether the display turns on

  • confirmation of when the issue first appeared

  • confirmation of whether the issue occurred after riding, transport, storage, impact, water exposure, modification, or third-party repair

  • photos of visible damage, if any

Safety Warnings

  • Do not continue riding if the bike loses power unexpectedly.

  • Do not open sealed electrical components.

  • Do not work on wiring while the bike is powered on or charging.

  • Do not force connectors.

  • Stop and contact support if you are unsure.

What This Issue Means

If pedal assist is not functioning and no error code is present, the issue may be related to:

  • a loose connection

  • a damaged sensor

  • damaged wiring

  • the controller

  • the wiring harness

  • a cadence sensor or torque sensor issue

Depending on the Aventon model, your bike may use:

  • a cadence sensor

  • or a torque sensor

Cadence sensors detect crank rotation.

Torque sensors adjust motor support based on rider pedal input.

Possible Causes

Possible causes may include:

  • loose connection

  • dirt or grit inside a connector

  • damaged cable

  • damaged harness

  • damaged cadence sensor

  • damaged torque sensor

  • damaged controller

  • visible impact damage

  • water exposure

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1 – Confirm the Bike Powers On Normally

Power the bike on and confirm the display operates normally.

If yes

Continue to Step 2.

If no

Refer to the “Bike Will Not Power On” troubleshooting article before continuing.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 2.

Step 2 – Check for Visible Damage

Inspect visible cables, connectors, and wiring around:

  • the crank area

  • the motor area

  • the display

  • the harness connections

Check for:

  • loose plugs

  • dirt or grit

  • cuts or frayed cables

  • impact damage

  • water exposure

Reconnect any loose accessible connectors and retest the bike.

If yes

If damage is visible, please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 3.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by a loose or contaminated connection.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 3.

Step 3 – Check Whether the Bike Uses a Cadence Sensor or Torque Sensor

Different Aventon models use different pedal assist systems.

If yes

If you know your bike uses a cadence sensor, continue to Step 4.

If your bike uses a torque sensor, continue to Step 7.

If no

Please contact support with your Aventon model information before continuing.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to the correct sensor troubleshooting section below.

Cadence Sensor Troubleshooting

Step 4 – Inspect the Cadence Sensor Area

Inspect the cadence sensor area near the crank on the non-drive side of the bike.

Confirm:

  • the sensor appears secure

  • the sensor has not shifted

  • the sensor is not rotating

  • there is no visible damage

Disconnect and reconnect any accessible cadence sensor connection if safe to do so.

Retest the bike.

If yes

If pedal assist now functions correctly, the issue was likely caused by a loose connection.

If no

Continue to Step 5.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 5.

Step 5 – Check Whether Walk Mode Works

Test whether walk mode functions normally.

If yes

The cadence sensor may not be functioning correctly.

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 6.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 6.

Step 6 – Check Whether Both PAS and Throttle Are Not Functioning

Test whether both pedal assist and throttle are non-functional.

If yes

The issue may involve the controller or related wiring.

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Please contact support for further assistance.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Contact support.

Torque Sensor Troubleshooting

Step 7 – Inspect Torque Sensor Connections

Inspect accessible wiring and connectors related to the torque sensor and motor area.

Confirm connectors are:

  • secure

  • clean

  • free from dirt or grit

  • free from visible damage

Reconnect any loose accessible connectors and retest the bike.

If yes

If pedal assist now functions correctly, the issue was likely caused by a loose connection.

If no

Continue to Step 8.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 8.

Step 8 – Perform a Torque Sensor Reset Procedure

If walk mode still functions, perform the following reset process:

  1. Put the bike into ECO mode.

  2. Hold the down arrow button for 2 seconds to activate walk mode.

  3. Allow the bike to assist itself for approximately 30 feet.

  4. Return the bike to ECO mode.

  5. Cycle through all pedal assist levels.

  6. Retest pedal assist function.

If yes

If pedal assist now functions correctly, the issue may have been related to torque sensor calibration.

Continue monitoring the bike.

If no

Continue to Step 9.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 9.

Step 9 – Check Whether Walk Mode Still Functions

Test whether walk mode still operates normally.

If yes

The torque sensor may require further inspection.

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Continue to Step 10.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 10.

If yes

The issue may involve the controller or related wiring.

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

If no

Please contact support for further assistance.

If the issue clears

Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Contact support.
