Aventon – Pedal Assist Not Functioning & No Error Code Present TroubleshootingUpdated 2 days ago

This article explains how to troubleshoot pedal assist (PAS) issues on Aventon e-bikes when no error code is shown.

Use this article if your bike:

  • powers on normally

  • has no error code

  • throttle works but pedal assist does not

  • walk mode works but pedal assist does not

  • pedal assist works intermittently

Before You Start

Prepare:

  • order number

  • Aventon model

  • photo/video of the issue

  • confirmation of whether throttle works

  • confirmation of whether walk mode works

  • confirmation of whether the display turns on

  • when the issue first appeared

  • whether the issue followed water exposure, crash, impact, transport, modification, or third-party repair

  • photos of visible damage, if any

Do not continue riding if the bike has visible damage, electrical smell, smoke, overheating, water exposure, motor resistance, or unpredictable motor behaviour.

What This Issue Means

Loss of pedal assist can be caused by a loose connection, damaged component, cadence sensor issue, torque sensor issue, harness issue, or controller issue.

Possible Causes

  • loose connection

  • dirt or damage in a connector

  • damaged cable

  • damaged cadence sensor

  • damaged torque sensor

  • damaged harness

  • damaged controller

Troubleshooting Steps

Step 1 – Check for Visible Damage or Loose Connections

Inspect visible cables and accessible connectors around the display, main wire harness, motor, and sensor area.

Check for:

  • loose plugs

  • dirt or grit

  • damaged cables

  • cut or frayed wiring

  • visible impact damage

Reconnect any loose accessible connectors, then retest the bike.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by a loose or interrupted connection. Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 2.

If anything looks damaged

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

Step 2 – Confirm Whether Throttle and Walk Mode Work

Test whether the throttle and walk mode still function.

If throttle and walk mode work

Continue to Step 3.

If throttle and walk mode do not work

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

Cadence Sensor Bikes

Step 3 – Check the Cadence Sensor

If your bike uses a cadence sensor, inspect the cadence sensor near the crank area.

Check whether the sensor:

  • is secure

  • is not rotating

  • has no visible damage

  • has no loose accessible connection

Reconnect the cadence sensor connection if it is accessible and safe to do so, then retest the bike.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by a loose cadence sensor connection. Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

Torque Sensor Bikes

Step 4 – Check the Torque Sensor Connection

If your bike uses a torque sensor, inspect the accessible torque sensor connection to the wire harness or controller.

Reconnect any loose accessible connection, then retest the bike.

If the issue clears

The issue was likely caused by a loose torque sensor connection. Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Continue to Step 5.

Step 5 – Reset the Torque Sensor

Only complete this step if throttle or walk mode is still working.

  1. Put the bike into ECO mode.

  2. Hold the down arrow for 2 seconds to activate walk mode.

  3. Let the bike assist itself for about 9 metres.

  4. Put the bike back into ECO mode.

  5. Cycle through all pedal assist levels.

  6. Retest pedal assist.

If the issue clears

The torque sensor reset may have restored pedal assist function. Continue monitoring the bike.

If the issue remains

Please contact our support team with the photos/videos listed below so we can review the next step.

When To Contact Support

Contact support if:

  • pedal assist still does not work

  • throttle and walk mode also do not work

  • there is visible damage

  • a cable or connector is damaged

  • the bike has had water exposure, crash, impact, transport damage, modification, or third-party repair

  • you are unsure how to safely complete a step

What To Send Support

Please send:

  • order number

  • Aventon model

  • photo/video of the issue

  • photo of the display

  • photos of the sensor area and accessible connectors

  • photos of visible damage

  • confirmation of whether throttle works

  • confirmation of whether walk mode works

  • confirmation of whether the display turns on

  • steps already completed from this article

Important Safety Notes

  • Do not continue riding if pedal assist cuts in or out unexpectedly.

  • Do not ride if there is visible damage, overheating, smoke, burning smell, water exposure, or motor resistance.

  • Do not open the battery, controller, motor, or sealed electrical components.

  • Do not force connectors.

  • Do not work on wiring while the bike is powered on or connected to the charger.
